Thame Girls U16 3 -1 win v Sonning
Thame travelled to Sonning for our first game of the season. Hoping for a patch of sun we instead got sprinkles of rain and then a heavy downpour! Undeterred the girls played strong assertive hockey from the start. A new squad meant it was the first time playing together for some of the girls but you could hardly tell. As usual the first ten minutes were a bit scrappy but then we really started to apply pressure and the majority of play was in the oppositions half. Great runs down the wing from Bel and Rowan firing many balls across the goal, the team were unlucky not to get a few goals on the score sheet. The forwards continued to apply pressure and the midfield were keen for a slice of the action so although the D was getting maybe a little crowded eventually Rowan managed to slot a goal in, 1-0. We had the best possession for the rest of the half but with our midfield pressing up too we were caught out when Sonning got a ball clear and had a pretty straight run on goal, 1-1 just before half time.
The second half saw more of the same pressure from Thame. Regular subbing gave the girls some well earned rest and everyone was running their socks off on pitch. Brilliant forward positioning from Jenna saw her score her first goal right on the line 2-1. A period of defensive play saw us defend several short corners, endless running from the midfield, Esme, Rowan and Jess and cool defending from Emma & Emily kept the ball out. Immy had several super saves, kicks and dives! The forwards were still hungry for goals, Amalie, Amber kept pressing forward but it was Jenna who broke free in the D again to slot home her 2nd goal! 3-1. The girls were very versatile in which position they played which will really strengthen the game going forward. Special mention also for Poppy and Emily making their U16 debut.
Well done girls, an exciting season ahead!
