It was the ladies 1s first home game of the season, and this week it was against Banbury who had come down into our league.
So, with some trepidation, expecting a tough game, the Thame side had a good warm up and dominated the game from the very start. With far more D penetrations than them, Thame had a few early chances but their talented keeper kept the scoreline at 0-0 for most of the first half. It was an unlucky deflection on the halfway line that saw the Banbury team get ahead of the Thame defence, capitalising on their one chance with a good strike, making it 1-0.
Thame’s heads didn’t go down and everyone fought hard to regain possession across the pitch. Eventually, it was Angelina who managed to get the ball over the line after a bit of to and fro with the keeper. This saw us go to half time at 1:1. Thame’s team talk discussed pressing tighter and soon into the second half, Banbury were struggling to keep up with waves to pressure from Thame’s forwards. A long ball from Grace on the left got to Sharpie near the D which she skilfully slotted into the net! Banbury were increasing the pressure and there were some concerning moments when Charlotte had to leave her goal to close down their forward leaving Julia to save a ball on the line.
Thame regained composure and along came the second goal. A well worked short corner out to Bella and back to sharpie to put away. At 3-1, Banbury were chasing hard, earning a flick from the ball finding Graces foot on the goal line. Thankfully this was saved and after another 5 tense minutes, the game ended at 3-1.
Overall, a great shift put in by all: high work rate, tenacity and strong mindset showing lots of promise for the rest of the season.
