Today we set off for Southgate which is our longest away trip in the Chiltern League.
We've worked on some of the problem areas (starting the game at 100%, giving the ball away, diving in on tackles, 16s) in recent matches and despite losing 3-0 to Southgate in the first game, we ended the second half with some direction and composure.
We then took on Amersham and held them to a 1-1 draw with a goal from Olly after a well worked move from Ben, Louie and Charlie, this was a much better performance all around - the ball was moved much better and positioning was much improved on the first game. Ned also made some critical saves to secure the point. This 1 point was enough to secure our place in the league for the final rounds.
Last game was against Wycombe. Again, we moved the ball well and went 1-0 ahead after Olly found the net after a similar routine as our goal against Amersham. We then battled well in the last 5 minutes to maintain our position, but Wycombe struck with an equalizer. After the final 3 minutes which saw Ben leave the field of play after a stick smash on his knee and a good defensive line of Lucas, Max and Maurits, we saw out the game well - this was pleasing to see - not pretty but we secured the point. For Wycombe it was too late and the 1-1- result saw Thame secure 3rd place behind Southgate and Amersham.
We've learnt that at this level we must be better at holding and moving the ball at pace - if we fluff things, the other teams can capitalize and punish. We have learnt to adapt and fight and as a group we've grown up a lot in the past 2 sessions of this league.
Thanks to the parents for making the early start and for their positive contribution on the side-lines or behind the goal.
We end 2019 in a positive state, good team work and pride: Both boys teams progressing well and fighting with some much bigger and well-funded clubs #proudmanager
