Thame U14 v Wycombe U14 Boys A

After our league game a few weeks ago, Wycombe asked for a friendly with their A team as they felt the game would benefit all – I agreed.
Despite a plethora of illness caused by our friend the spike protein (we wish them well) and cancellations, we shuffled the pack and managed to gather 10 able bodied players for our game thanks to our fixer Justin Chantrey
Things did not look good – the weather from 0700 was stormy, torrential rain and chaotic and when arriving at 0930 it was amplified by the position of the pitch. Worry set in. However, true to Met Office accuracy, things stopped bang on 1000 and push back allowed battle to commence.
We had 10 + 1 from Wycombe – Millan – who proved to be handy (much to the despair of his mates!) 2 of our team – Kit and Dylan were gathered from the U12s at late notice and threw away their fears and settled into their first full pitch game. From the off, we dominated play and after 5’ forced 2 short corners. Without a recognised push out person, Millan offered, delivered, and got on the end of Charlie’s hit – 1-0. We then reset and after some silky play from Adam, Kit and Louie (This week’s Captain) forced another short corner. Copy-paste of the previous effort: 2-0. We went into the end of the first ¼ in great spirits. Wycombe swiftly recalled their player and sent us another. We stuck to our 3 at the back and attacking format in the second ¼. Lucas, who did not put a foot wrong all game, policed the defence diligently supported by Theo and Will who were both solid and got rid of the ball up the field when Wycombe attacked. Louie picked up on one of these passes and ran with the ball and sent it past the keeper – 3-0. Into the 3rd ¼ and we dominated but started to make few mistakes however maintained, thru Barney’s excellent sweeper keeping, a clean sheet. Wycombe had a tidy player in their centre but some nice man marking and our “choke” tactic (look it up on EH – its their term, not mine) we’ve practised in training which was great to see. Leo and Adam ran up and down the lines to the point of exhaustion. We attacked more in the final ¼ and Kit, took hold of a lovely, worked pass between Adam, Dylan and then Charlie to pick out Kit who slammed the ball home – 4-0. So we’ve now proudly beaten both Wycombe A and B teams this season. The difference between the teams today – We played, were fitter, passed and ran as a team.
Thanks to the supporters and many thanks to our umpires for ensuring a flowing game. Plus, we didn’t sit on the backboards during the rest periods Justin Eyre.
