With Erin stepping in as captain this week we finally won the toss and got the choice of goals (low sun played a big part in the decision). The girls started on the front foot and Thame were instantly on the attack. Keeping possession of the ball the girls were constantly in their attacking half threatening the Oxford defence. It took 11 minutes before we could finally find a way through all the sticks in the D with the ball going backwards and forwards but finding Amelia who slotted the ball in to score, 1-0. The game restarted and instantly Thame were back on the attack with short corners being awarded but we were just unable to convert. The poor Thame defenders were looking a little bored and so we started subbing them just to get them moving! The girls kept battling hard with several breakaways but the Oxford goalie made some fantastic saves denying Thame that second goal. Another short corner for Thame later and still no second goal and the half time whistle was blown. The half time talk was very much keep doing what you are doing but let's just find that finishing touch and lets mix the short corners up a bit! The girls lined up for the second half and Oxford had woken up a bit. Although possession was mainly with Thame, Oxford were starting to get some breakaways and moving the ball down to our defenders but who held firm with some great interceptions and clearances from Emily and with Charley sprinting back to upset Oxford's game we found our way back up to our attacking half, being rewarded by a lovely goal from Charley, 2-0. Buoyed on by the goal it wasn't long before Charley was taking the ball back down the pitch, dribbling past the Oxford players and crossing it in across the goal where an awaiting Josie neatly slotted it in, 3-0. The game was not over and may be the girls were a little too confident as Oxford found a way through drawing our defenders away leaving a one on one with Lucy in goal where they just managed to sneak it past her, 3-1. This was a bit of a wake up and the girls seemed to remember that the ball was theirs and so duly kept hold of it. With great pressure from Thame and a few more short corners later they managed to get the ball to cross that goal line again with a second goal from Amelia, 4-1. Some stand out performances from Amelia, Erin, Charley and Emily but a great performance by all the players today and they are really progressing well as a team, showing grit and determination and giving the spectators a great match to watch. MOM - Amelia
A big thank you to Lisi for the seamless subbing and to the umpires, Julia and Rob.
